250 Year Old Weathervane “Buddy” Returns to Groton   [ 2017-07-07 ]

After months and months of careful repair, the Old Groton Meetinghouse’s more than 250-year-old weathervane, affectionately known as “Buddy,” has been beautifully gilded for his return to Groton on Saturday, July 15th.

We will start gathering at 9:30 am on the Minuteman Common. We expect Buddy to be lifted to the steeple sometime between 10:00 and 10:30. Once safely placed on the spire, Buddy’s protective wrapping for his travels will be removed and he will be unveiled in all his like-new beauty.

Groton Minutemen Drummers and Muskets will be on hand, and we are hoping that Earl Carter will be able to bring his gloriously restored Revolutionary War cannon for display.

It will be a morning to celebrate Buddy’s placement back on the spire overlooking Minuteman Common where he can keep a watchful eye on Groton’s Town Center as he has done for so many years.

The return of Buddy will also mark the completion of the Meetinghouse’s Phase 1A Restoration Project that was funded by a Town of Groton Community Preservation Act Grant, a Massachusetts Historical Commission Grant, and generous contributions from the First Parish congregation and from the citizens of Groton. Thanks to all who contributed so generously.

Following the unveiling, light refreshments will be served and there will be a chance to view pictures and learn about Buddy’s transformation over the past few months.

Come and join in the fun!
